All other virtues, like the plantain tree,
Produce their fruit, but then their force is spent.
Alone the marvelous tree of bodhicitta
Constantly bears fruit and grows unceasingly.
-Bodhicharyavatara. Chapter 1, Stanza 11

Dorjé Lopön Hun Lye received a letter of thanks to all who helped in fundraising almost $23k for Kagyu Shedrupling in Bhutan. You can see below.

Our Story

Kagyu Shedrupling Monastery is a non-profit organization founded in 2020 with the goal of educating Bhutanese children from low-income families , orphans, and those from broken families. In founding Kagyu Shedrupling, we are reviving the Drikung Kagyu lineage in Bhutan. The Drikung Kagyu Lineage was first established in Bhutan when one of Kyobpa Jikten Sumgön’s heart-disicples, Nyo Gyelwa Lhanangpa Sanggye Rinchen (1164-1224) built a fortress called “Do Ngon Dzong” in the year 1216 what is now the capital of Bhutan, Thimphu. Nyo brought to this area the teachings of Kyobpa Jikten Sumgon and established a strong network of monasteries and hermitages that existed for many centuries. Unfortunately, by the 17th century, all that remained in Bhutan of this tradition are some vague historical memories and ancient ruins. Thus, this project to establish Kagyu Shedrupling in modern Bhutan is of monumental significance.

Our Organization

Right now, Kagyu Shedrupling has a total of 30 members, including students and staff. We started in the beginning of 2020 when we rented a large house to serve as our temporary monastic home in Paro. This house has 14 rooms, 4 bathrooms, 2 storage rooms and 2 kitchens. We are fortunate to be able to rent this house for a lower than usual rent (due to the generosity of the landlord and their support for our Dharma project) but staying in a rented house indefinitely with a large number of students is far from ideal.

Our current monthly expenses are approximately USD 3000 per month, which includes:

  • House rent
  • Feed students
  • Electricity bill
  • Staff payment
  • Stationary

Furthermore, students are confined to a small space, which has an indirect impact on their physical activities and learning environment. As a result, our next phase is to secure land and construct a modest but proper monastery so that the students have a proper environment for their development and can be educated in a monastic learning center.

Thanks to the support of many—including Drikung Kagyu Foundation, USA—Kagyu Shedrupling is moving into the 2nd phase. We have recently identified a suitable piece of land in Paro which is 30 decimals in size (a “decimal” is 1/100 of an acre). The seller’s price is US$ 3700 per decimal. Thus far, we have raised enough funds for 20 decimals land. We are therefore needing urgent help to collect the funds for the remaining 10 decimals—which is US$37,000.

Phase Development of Kagyu Shedrupling Monastery:

  • 2020: Ordination of groups of young monks, temporary home at a rented house, hiring of teachers to teach the monks basic education, English-language & Dharma.
  • 2022: Purchase land in Paro, Bhutan. Start building a monastery for the benefit of the students and improve their physical activities and learning environment.
  • 2030: Complete Kagyu Shedrupling Monastery to promote a healthy monastic environment and rebirth of Drikung Kagyu lineage in Bhutan.
