This teaching begins with Dr. Lye giving a brief explanation on the famous mantra of the The Heart Sutra, followed with a group recitation of the sutra and mantra. Dr. Lye then gives an overview of the Heart Sutra and its traditional place in the Buddhist traditions of East Asia (China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnamese) and the Himalayan region and its cultural orbits (Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and Mongolia). Before explaining the philosophical aspects of The Heart Sutra, Dr. Lye begins first with a discussion of “demons” and how the Heart Sutra has been practiced by many Buddhists for the expelling of demons.
